Compressed Backup

When backing up your sources using the compressed option, your backup sources are compressed into standard ZIP file(s).  The ZIP file(s) will be placed in the Compressed folder within the backup destination.  These ZIP files can be opened with any extraction tool, such as Windows, WinZip, or WinRAR.  Safe Data Backup is not needed to do any restore operation, simply use your favorite extraction tool.

Safe Data Backup supports creating ZIP files with 64 bit extensions, so you can put virtually an unlimited number files in your ZIP file(s), and the ZIP files themselves can be virtually any size.  The only practical limit is the amount of system resources on your computer.

When creating compressed ZIP files you may choose to have your data encrypted using AES 256, a very strong data encryption algorithm.  The AES encryption method has been chosen by NIST as a Federal Information Processing Standard.  The '256' means the encryption keys are 256 bits long.  To maximize the security of your data you should choose a good encryption password.  To obtain the maximum benefit of AES 256 your password should be at least 64 characters long.  A strong password contains a combination of upper case, lower case, digits, and punctuation characters.  A strong password should not be easily guessed, and must be kept private.  If you encrypt your ZIP files, you must remember the encryption password.  Without the encryption password there is no way of obtaining your data from the encrypted ZIP files.

When making compressed backups, there will be one ZIP file for each root directory contained in your backup sources.  For example, if all of your backup sources are coming from the C: drive, you will just have one ZIP file.  However, if you have backup sources located on the C: drive and also other backup sources from a network drive \\ServerABC\ShareXYZ you will have two ZIP files, one for each root source.  When more than one ZIP file is created, the ZIP filenames will be modified, such that the root source is appended to the filename.  For example, if your specified filename is Backup Job 1.zip and you have the 2 sources C: and \\ServerABC\ShareXYZ your two ZIP files will be named Backup Job 1_C.zip and Backup Job 1_ServerABC_ShareXYZ.zip

The remote backup options are available when using a compressed backup.  Remote backup can be done through either FTP or E-Mail.

You can have your ZIP file(s) split into multiple files when the file size exceeds a specified size.  This can be useful when using the E-Mail remote backup feature if your mail server has a maximum file size limitation.  When backing up to multiple CD or DVD discs the splitting options are set automatically for you, depending on the size of the inserted backup media.

You may also specify whether to include all files in your ZIPs, or only files modified since the last successful backup.  This can be a useful feature when doing a remote backup, to keep the file size reduced, minimizing the time to upload or transmit the ZIPs.  For more, see Compressed Date Filter.
