Calendar Restore Instructions For Older Versions

Versions 4.0 through 4.2:

First, exit Remind-Me using "File / Exit" from the menu.  Simply hitting the "Close" button in the upper right corner of the window is not sufficient, you must use "File / Exit" to completely quit.  You should not see the Remind-Me icon in the task tray.  Next, copy the event file you want to restore into the data folder:

For Windows 98/ME/NT/2000/XP the data folder will be:

C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Remind-Me

If you are using Windows Vista or 7, the data folder will be:

C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Remind-Me

Make sure the filename is exactly "mydata.bdy".  Re-start Remind-Me, and you will see the events from the just copied mydata.bdy file.

If you are using version 3.9 or earlier, the instructions are slightly different (see below).

Background Information:  By default, Remind-Me stores your calendar database in a file called "mydata.bdy", located in the data folder shown above.  Whenever you exit Remind-Me it will make an automatic backup for you in the "Backup" directory.  Your last 30 copies of mydata.bdy will be kept in this Backup folder, each one appended with a number.  If you need to restore one of these, you can look at the file date and size to determine the best one to restore.  When restoring, remember to rename the file to just "mydata.bdy" by removing the number from the filename.

File Copying Tips:
Tip #1:  Windows Explorer is a common application to copy and rename files, and can be used to copy your backed up "mydata.bdy" file into the data folder.  Start Windows Explorer by going to "Start / All Programs / Accessories / Windows Explorer".

Tip #2:  When using Windows Explorer choose the menu command "Tools / Folder Options... / View" and turn off the option "Hide extensions for known file types".  This way you will be able to see all the file extensions, and know that you're really naming the file "mydata.bdy".  A common mistake is to rename the file as "mydata.bdy.bdy" because the previously mentioned option is on, and it isn't obvious what the real filename is.

Tip #3:  The "Application Data" (and "AppData") data folder is a hidden folder by default, so you may also need to turn on "Show hidden files and folders" within Windows Explorer's "Tools / Folder Options... / View" dialog.

Versions 3.9 and Earlier:

Follow the same instructions for restoring versions 4.0 through 4.2, except note the location of mydata.bdy is different in 3.9 and earlier.  For versions 3.9 and earlier the mydata.bdy file was located in the directory where you installed Remind-Me.  Normally, this is a path like "C:\Program Files\Remind-Me".
